About NCL

Donate to NCL and help protect workers and consumers
The air is getting chilly, holiday plans are being made, and 2011 is drawing to a close. The end of the year is also a time when many consumers open their hearts and wallets to causes and organizations they believe in. This season, we ask you keep the National Consumers League in mind during your year-end giving.
Across the country, workers and consumers are under attack. From the streets of New York and Washington, where thousands lead the march against multi-million dollar pay packages for executives and growing wealth disparities, to the public employees in Ohio and Wisconsin whose collective bargaining rights are threatened, America faces a daunting future.
Since we first pledged in 1899 to fight for social and economic justice for workers and consumers, NCL has made significant strides. We advocate every day to protect the American worker and consumer and have helped improve living and working conditions across the country.
But what if we could do more?
In this spirit, we are asking you to consider giving a vital year-end gift to the National Consumers League this season.
Here's what your valuable, tax-deductible year-end gift can do:
Protect workers under the age of 18 from injury and death. Every day 400 children under the age of 18 suffer work-related injuries. Last year, 35 farm worker children died from unsafe working conditions. NCL co-chairs the Child Labor Coalition, the leading consumer group working for fair labor standards for children. NCL also publishes the annual “Five Most Dangerous Jobs for Teens” in response to the states regulations for working teens. On behalf of the farm worker children who can’t speak for themselves, NCL is advocating for the passage of the CARE Act, which would make child farm work safer and help kids stay in school.
Inform and educate consumers about food safety and nutrition. From whistle blowing about false claims on food products to improving the safety of America's food supply, NCL serves as a watchdog for consumers. We represent consumer voices on Capitol Hill and at FDA and USDA hearings. Each year 325,000 people are hospitalized due to foodborne illnesses; we fight to dramatically reduce this number for 2012. NCL pledges protect consumers and work to reduce the gaps in our current food safety system.
Improve Americans’ health and health literacy through the critical message of medication adherence. Script Your Future is the country’s first public-private campaign focused on helping consumers who suffer from chronic conditions take their medications as directed. One out of every three patients with a chronic condition is placing his or her health and future at risk due to poor adherence. NCL launched Script Your Future in 2011 to help patient health and tackle the $290 billion in avoidable healthcare costs with support from more than 100 Committed Partners, including U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin. Through a variety of multi-media messaging and tools we are helping patients take back their future.
Educate and prevent consumers from falling victim to fraudulent scams. In 2011, fake check scams alone cost consumers millions. For more than 15 years NCL’s fraud center has been advising consumers about telemarketing and Internet fraud. Our Alliance Against Fraud brings together retailers, financial institutions, services providers, technology companies, researchers, consumer advocates, and government agencies to advance consumer protections against fraud.
Build a new generation of savvy consumers. NCL's LifeSmarts program teaches high school and middle school students citizenship and consumer skills and knowledge through a national online and in-person competition. Through LifeSmarts, thousands of teenagers in 34 states learn about personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology, and consumer rights and responsibilities.
We’re passionate about NCL’s mission. We work so that you, your children, and all consumers can be protected from con artists, enjoy safe food, use medications safely and effectively, and enjoy improved working conditions.
Thank you for your continued support. Please join the fight for a better world for consumers and workers alike in 2012 and beyond. Please donate today.
