NEARLY 100 YEARS ago, the National Consumers League pioneered consumer advocacy in 1899
when consumers had little voice in the workplace or marketplace.
Thousands lived in overcrowded tenements. Women and children worked in sweatshops --
laboring for long hours for starvation wages. Corporations replaced family-run businesses and
shops -- paying only for cheap labor in their search for higher profits.
Now, as the League moves toward its centennial in 1999, it
will continue to work to bring consumer power to bear on the marketplace and workplace.
