Gen X Activists Fight Poverty, Crime
and Major Consumer Issues
NCL Conference Features Young Movers and Shakers
ORLANDO...MAY 4... The power of young
people as advocates and consumers is the focus of the National
Consumers League annual conference on Monday and Tuesday in Lake
Buena Vista, Florida. The conference unites community leaders,
senior and labor representatives, and business people with young
activists from around the nation.
Local students include:
- LeAlan
Jones, 19, a Peabody award-winning reporter and
currently a criminal justice student at Florida State University.
His story on the murder of a child on the South Side of Chicago,
Remorse: The 14 Stories of Eric Morse, aired on National
Public Radio's All Things Considered. LeAlan will elaborate
on how the NPR story changed his life.
- Rebecca Loeb, a second grade student, exhibited her
first food related allergic reaction when she was eight months
old and has since been found to have potentially fatal allergies
to numerous foods. Ms. Loeb is conscientious about her allergies,
regularly reads ingredient labels, and always asks questions
before she eats. She will speak with her mother, Sherri Loeb,
who is on a mission to educate the public about the implications
of food allergies.
- Donnel Selder, 17, a Dade City, Florida, volunteer with
the Teen Dream Team. The Teen Dream Team is a unique club
for young farmworkers and other poverty-entrenched youth in the
five-mile radius of Lock Street in Dade City, an area of high
youth crime, gang-related activity, violence, and drug trafficking.

Founded in 1899, NCL is
the nation's pioneer consumer group which works to bring consumer
power to bear on marketplace and workplace issues. NCL worked
for child labor provisions in the Fair Labor Standards Act (passed
in 1938) and more recently, has helped organize the Child
Labor Coalition (CLC) which is committed to ending
child labor exploitation in the U.S. and abroad.
