At the height of last year’s holiday shopping season, an estimated 110 million Target shoppers found out that hackers had compromised their personal information, exposing them to potential fraud. As bad as the Target data breach was, it is just one of thousands of breaches that have affected more than a billion consumer records in the last decade.
Hackers are having a field day at consumers’ expense. This is because businesses and other organizations that collect consumer data haven’t made data security a high enough priority.
This has to change, and it has to change soon.
Data security reform is a bipartisan issue that can’t wait for the next Congress or the next President. For too long, squabbles between entrenched interests stood in the way of change. The National Consumers League is working every day to raise the alarm in Washington, but we can’t do it alone.
