Show Your Congressman You Support the YWPA

SAMPLE LETTER FOLLOWS:

Dear Representative (LAST NAME):

I write to urge you to co-sponsor the Youth Worker Protection Act (H.R. 3139), introduced by Congressman Tom Lantos on September 23.

Do you know that nine young workers (all 17-years-old or younger) died this summer due to workplace injury?  Every 30 seconds, a young worker under the age of 18 is injured on the job.

No one questions that employment offers youth many benefits.  But, too much of youth work today is neither appropriate nor safe.  The Fair Labor Standards Act’s child labor provisions, written in the 1930s, are inadequate.  It is critical that they be updated to reflect the realities of the 21st century – addressing  new technologies and hazards and the educational competitiveness our youth and country need to maintain to succeed.

Please let me know that you have decided to support this bill.

Sincerely,
