LifeSmarts rocks the Rockies!

Originally posted at our new LifeSmarts blog! Check it out here: Last month, the LifeSmarts team packed their bags and headed west to the mountains, for our first foray into the fields and firs of Colorado! We were very excited to reach the Mile High City of Denver, and we brought a lot of fun materials with us. On Friday, we were happy to have ten teams of eager students join us for a LifeSmarts Training Camp, hosted at the Denver Aquarium. Interest was very high, we even had teachers who couldn’t bring students show up! Starting early in the morning, teams of students and teachers worked through fun educational activities, including a scavenger hunt using the 2012 Consumer Action Handbook, and our new TeamSmarts Rally, where students moved from table to table answering fast-paced multiple-choice questions. Of course, it wouldn’t be LifeSmarts without a round behind the buzzers, so everyone got a chance to compete on stage. After a full six hours of events, coach Scott LoBosco’s team from Liberty High School claimed victory, taking a ton of fun prizes back with them to Colorado Springs. We ramped up the competition even more on Saturday when we presented LifeSmarts at the FBLA National Fall Leadership Conference. Starting at 9:00AM, LifeSmarts presented three standing-room-only workshops showcasing the new partnership between FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) and LifeSmarts. Chapters can compete in three different ways:
  • By playing the traditional competition, through state competitions
  • By winning the FBLA TeamSmarts Challenge (monthly winners get $100 for their chapter, with the FBLA Challenge winning team receiving a $2500 stipend to compete at the LifeSmarts National Chamionship in Atlanta in April 2013;
  • By playing the FBLA pilot competitive event (the top teams in the FBLA Fall Challenge and Spring Challenge will compete for the title at the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim in June 2013.
Last weekend in Denver was a great success for LifeSmarts, but we couldn’t do it without immense support. We’d like to thank all the coaches and volunteers who spent the day participating. We also want to give a huge thank you to our friends at Western Union, who not only sponsored our festivities, but also provided volunteers (including great judges and question masters). We hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did!
