Get a sample complaint letter
Many Web sites offer sample complaint letters and advice about how to complain – and some even enable consumers to post their complaints for others to see. Type “consumer complaints” into a search engine and you’ll get millions of results. Read the “about” and “privacy” section of the Web sites to be sure you understand what will happen if you provide information about your problem. Be cautious about Web sites that charge to send complaints to businesses. You can send your complaint yourself and unless a service such as mediation is being offered, there is no need to pay someone else to try to resolve your complaint.
The Federal Citizen Information Center (CIC) www.consumeraction.gov Web site has a sample letter under “Consumer Topics” (click on “Resolve Consumer Problems”) and also provides contact information for state, local and federal agencies, Better Business Bureaus, and corporate contacts under “Resource Directory.” You’ll also find this information in the CIC “Consumer Action Handbook,” available in many libraries. |
