WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today the nation’s oldest consumer advocacy organization announced its support for the Food and Drug Administration’s final report on counterfeit drugs and renewed its commitment to guarding consumers against fraudulent medicines. The National Consumers League (NCL), an organization dedicated to educating consumers on issues of health and fraud, runs the National Fraud Information Center and Internet Fraud Watch programs. It recently signed onto the FDA’s Counterfeit Alert Network (CAN), a system of national organizations, consumer groups, and industry representatives organized to deliver anti-counterfeit drug information—including incident specific announcements as well as more general information—to their audiences in a timely fashion.

“The National Consumers League is proud to partner with the FDA and other groups to help spread the word to consumers about the very real dangers of counterfeit drugs,” said Linda Golodner, NCL President. This spring, NCL will launch an educational campaign on its Fraud.org Web site to teach consumers about the fake drugs. “Consumers today are faced with a variety of challenges in our increasingly global marketplace. Initiatives such as this promise to help them make more informed decisions to identify—and prevent—situations in which they face health and financial risks.”
