WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, the 12th season of the
LifeSmarts program begins what is expected to be the educational
game show-style competition’s biggest year yet. Each year,
thousands of students from across the country answer millions of
questions testing knowledge of consumer-oriented issues in five
subject areas.
LifeSmarts, a program run by the National Consumers League
(NCL), is a consumer education competition that tests teens in
grades 9-12 about personal finance, health and safety, the
environment, technology, and consumer rights and
responsibilities. Students begin by logging on, taking a series
of practice quizzes, and forming teams to compete first online,
and then at the state level, for a chance to go to the national
competition, which will be held in Philadelphia, PA, next April.
Last year, students from 32 states made their way to the
national competition in San Francisco to vie for the national
championship title, which was ultimately taken by the team from
Maryland.
“This year promises to be our best ever,” said Lisa Hertzberg,
who runs the program for the National Consumers League. “We
expect more students than ever before to log on, take a practice
quiz, and join in the fun.”
State programs are generally coordinated by offices of state
attorneys general, Better Business Bureaus, credit counseling
services, cooperative extension programs, universities or other
organizations. LifeSmarts programs benefit from the financial
support of community-minded businesses, labor unions, and
individuals at the local, state, and national level. To find out
how to get involved, contact Hertzberg at
