Washington, DC, October 10, 2007—Just as you should have a fire
extinguisher and insurance to protect your investment in your
home in case of fire, you need to have the right tools to
protect your personal information online. To celebrate National
Cyber Security Awareness month this October, the National
Consumers League has added new information to its
www.phishinginfo.org Web site about how to avoid becoming a
victim of online identity theft.
“Consumers have lots of options for cyber protection, but it can
be confusing,” said Susan Grant, director of NCL’s Fraud Center.
“The new information on our anti-phishing Web site explains how
verification engines, security toolbars, and other tools can
help to keep your personal information safe and how to find
them.”
Phishing – identity thieves tricking consumers into providing
sensitive information by impersonating banks and other
well-known companies and organizations, usually through bogus
email messages – in the top ten Internet frauds reported to
NCL’s Fraud Center. Other cyber threats include “hacking” and “pharming”.
For information on these and new information for consumers about
how to avoid becoming a victim of online identity theft, go to
the “Protect Yourself” section of
www.phishinginfo.org and click on “Tips and Tools.” The
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation contributed to the “Tips
and Tools” information. |
