WASHINGTON, DC --
The pitch is that you’ll
make money by joining the program and recruiting others. But the
reality is that in pyramid schemes, you and your friends will
lose money, not make it. February’s tips in the National
Consumers League’s “2007 Scam-Free Calendar” help consumers
learn how to tell the difference between pyramid schemes and
legitimate money-making opportunities. The nation’s oldest
nonprofit consumer advocacy organization, NCL works to educate
consumers about how to avoid rip-offs and make wise decisions in
today’s marketplace.
Each month this year, the
home page on NCL’s
www.fraud.org Web site features the 2007 Scam-Free Calendar
and featured tips for the month. Covering a range of subjects
from how to shop safely online to how to avoid car sales and
repair rip-offs, the tips are sponsored by major companies,
government agencies, and organizations. The Direct Selling
Association sponsored February's tips on pyramid schemes.
All of the calendar tips
are archived at
www.fraud.org/calendar, along with a “Resources for
Consumers” page that provides contact information for government
agencies, consumer groups, and calendar sponsors.
NCL distributed the print
version of the calendar by providing quantities free of charge
to agencies and organizations around the country that work
directly with individuals in their communities. “From high
school students to seniors, these calendars are providing
consumers of all ages with the information they need to avoid
becoming fraud victims,” said Susan Grant, Director of NCL’s
National Fraud Information Center.
There are no printed
copies of the calendar remaining. |
