Investing is a good way to build a nest
egg for retirement, but it pays to do your homework so you can
make wise decisions and avoid losing your money to fraud. July’s
tips in the National Consumers League’s “2007 Scam-Free
Calendar” help consumers learn how to find information about
investment opportunities and the companies offering them, and
who to contact if they have questions or complaints.
“Since many people have their retirement
funds in investments, it’s more important than ever to check
things out carefully and steer clear of false promises of huge
returns with little or no risk,” said Susan Grant, Director of
NCL’s Fraud Center.
The nation’s oldest consumer advocacy organization,
NCL works to educate people about how to avoid rip-offs and make
wise decisions in today’s marketplace. Each month, the home page
of NCL’s
www.fraud.org Web site
features the calendar and tips for the month. Covering a range
of subjects from traveling sales crews to car sales and repair
rip-offs, the tips are sponsored by major companies, government
agencies, and organizations. AARP and the Investor Protection
Trust sponsored the July tips as part of their Campaign for Wise
and Safe Investing™.
All of the calendar tips are archived at
www.fraud.org/calendar,
along with a “Resources for Consumers” page that provides
contact information for government agencies, consumer groups,
and calendar sponsors. The print version of the calendar was
distributed to consumers free of charge through agencies and
organizations around the country.
There are no printed copies of the calendar remaining.
