WASHINGTON,
DC
–
The Internet is a great place to find
gifts, compare prices, and avoid the crush in stores during the
holiday season. Though many consumers now shop online, some are
wary of doing so. November’s tips in the National Consumers
League’s “2007 Scam-Free Calendar” provide advice about how to
shop online safely.
“Using a credit card is the safest way to
pay for online purchases because you have the right to dispute
the charges if the goods or services were never delivered or
misrepresented,” said Susan Grant, Director of NCL’s Fraud
Center. The tips explain how to tell that your credit card
information is secure as it is transmitted to the merchant and
what other things you should look for when shopping online.
The nation’s oldest consumer advocacy organization,
NCL works to educate people about how to avoid rip-offs and make
wise decisions in today’s marketplace. Each month, the home page
of NCL’s
www.fraud.org Web site
features the calendar and tips for the month. Covering a range
of subjects from phishing to pyramid schemes, the tips are
sponsored by major companies, government agencies, and
organizations. The November tips about holiday shopping online
were sponsored by MasterCard.
All of the calendar tips are archived at
www.fraud.org/calendar,
along with a “Resources for Consumers” page that provides
contact information for government agencies, consumer groups,
and calendar sponsors. The print version of the calendar was
distributed to consumers free of charge through agencies and
organizations around the country.
There are no printed copies of the calendar remaining.
