WASHINGTON,
DC
– Many people operate
their own legitimate businesses or work for others from their
home offices. But if someone claims it's easy to make lots of
money just sitting around in your bathrobe or bunny slippers, it
may be a scam.
March's tips in the National Consumers League’s “2008
Consumer Calendar: Do We Have Tips for You!” help consumers
separate the real job opportunities from money-losing scams with
warning signs.
NCL teaches consumers
how to identify fraudulent offers with the following advice:
-
Don't
assume an advertisement in the newspaper or radio makes it
legitimate. Scammers can purchase ad space just like the
rest of us.
-
Watch
out for emails offering get-rich-quick work-at-home deals.
-
Check
out the company before you agree to any relationship.
The nation’s oldest consumer advocacy organization,
NCL works to educate people about how to make wise decisions in
today’s marketplace. Each month, NCL’s Web site,
www.nclnet.org, will
feature the calendar and tips for the month. Covering a range
of subjects from medication safety, to avoiding scams, the tips are sponsored by major companies, government
agencies, and organizations. The March tips about avoiding
work-at-home scams were sponsored by Quixtar.
All of the calendar tips are archived at
www.nclnet.org/calendargallery,
along with a “Resources for Consumers” page that provides
contact information for government agencies, consumer groups,
and calendar sponsors. The print version of the calendar was
distributed to consumers free of charge through agencies and
organizations around the country.
There are no printed copies of the calendar remaining.
