Consumer savvy teens from across U.S. head to Minneapolis to compete for national LifeSmarts title

Consumer savvy teens representing 29 states will compete at the national event in Minneapolis later this month. More than 20,000 teens competed online for a chance to represent their states at Nationals. Players answered 2.6 million consumer questions in the online competition.

The Flagstaff Home Educators beat out 28 other state champion teams at NCL’s annual teen consumer education competition in Minneapolis during Financial Literacy Month.

Groups unite in pressing for a standardized, useful Alcohol Facts label

A coalition of public interest groups today called for the federal government to end 30 years of “deliberations and fact finding” by issuing a useful final regulation to require standardized labeling information on beer, wine and distilled spirits products.

Sally Greenberg selected for FDA Risk Communication Advisory Committee

Sally Greenberg, Executive Director of the National Consumers League, has been appointed to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Risk Communication Advisory Committee, charged with advising FDA on communicating the risks and benefits of FDA-regulated products to the public, in order to enhance consumers’ use of these products.

NCL to DOL: investigate allegations of child labor violations in Kosher slaughterhouse

NCL’s Reid Maki, Director of Social Responsibility and Fair Labor Standards and coordinator of the Child Labor Coalition, has written to Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, calling on the Department of Labor to investigate alleged child labor violations at the Agriprocessors kosher slaughterhouse in Postville, Iowa, which was raided by federal immigration officers on May 12.

Bad advice from retailers on DTV conversion could cost consumers millions

An informal survey of Washington, DC-area major television retailers conducted by NCL staff to test whether consumers inquiring about the DTV conversion were being given the right advice has turned up cause for alarm. NCL is calling on retailers to improve communications regarding the upcoming digital TV transition.
