Can you imagine living with the threat of becoming infected with debilitating polio or deadly measles? In this day in age, we haven’t had to worry about contracting contagious diseases, due to advancements in preventative vaccines – until recently.
In recent years, we have begun to see outbreaks of once eliminated diseases in the United States. In 2000, measles was officially declared eliminated in the United States. Yet in 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 189 cases, the second largest number of cases in the U.S. since 2000. Early in 2014, more outbreaks have been reported. Why has this disease, once essentially eliminated, resurfaced and seen such a drastic increase in outbreaks?
A growing number of individuals are choosing to forgo potentially lifesaving vaccinations. Amid rampant misinformation about vaccines, parents are often hesitant to have their children receive the government-recommended vaccines. A recent NCL survey revealed that 33 percent of parents mistakenly believe that vaccines can cause autism, despite numerous scientific studies finding no link between vaccination and autism.
